THE
ARCHAEOLOGICAL
MUSEUM
ZADAR

Since 1832, when Archaeological museum in Zadar was founded it has been the second one, considering the age, of all museums in Croatia. As the state museological institution it covers the area of the District of Zadar, together with the islands of Pag and Rab.

Within the Museum there are several departments such as: pre-historic, ancient, medieval and submarine archaeological units, as well as the joint archaeological collection in Nin, the library, technical unit and the department of general affairs.

There are more than 100,000 various items displayed in Zadar Archaeological Museum coming from all cultural and historical periods (from Palaeolithic time to the end of the 11th century).

At the moment there are 21 members of the stuff in the Museum. Some activities, such as numerous archaeological researches, have been partly undertaken, thanks to a number of young, educated archaeologists and drafts persons.

Beside these activities of discovering, displaying, conserving, documenting and dealing with all kinds of findings, the public presentation of many of these monuments and objects represents the significant activity of Archaeological museum in Zadar.

It is, so to say, in organising temporary exhibitions, printing catalogues, guides, prospects and posters, then in making the copies and replicas of archaeological objects, in printing post-cards, then in public guidance, as well as in contributing in daily newspapers, on radio and TV, lecturing in public and so on. Among the publications “Diadora” represents the most prominent annual magazine. Some 17 editions with more than 5,000 pages of scientific papers have been published so far, including the work of our scholars and foreign ones.

In these presentations the important place deserves the production of archaeological copies and reproductions made of ceramic, gypsum, stone, glass, metal and partly in plastic. These replicas can be seen at many places, hotels, restaurants or elsewhere throughout the Zadar area.
